Haunted Cemeteries is a guide to reportedly haunted cemeteries and burial grounds across the United States, from well known city cemeteries to small rural and pioneer graveyards. It collects cemetery ghost stories and legends, with the place, what is said to happen there and, where it is known, the documented history of the cemetery.
How the stories are written
Documented history is kept separate from legend. Each entry covers where the cemetery actually is, what the record says about its founding and the people buried there, and what visitors are said to see or hear, and it notes where sources disagree. The ghost stories are told as local folklore, not as proven fact. Where no record backs a story up, it is described as a legend or a rumor, and many of these tales have changed over the years. Cemeteries are burial grounds where families still come to grieve, so please visit with respect: follow each cemetery’s posted hours and rules, stay on paths and off the graves, never lean on, sit on or climb a headstone, make no rubbings without permission, leave flowers and keepsakes where they are, and never enter after closing or on private or church land without permission.
