Old Pioneer Cemetery, Bardstown, Kentucky

Old Pioneer Cemetery occupies a small block bounded by South 4th Street, West John Fitch Avenue, Mulberry Alley, and a rear alley, immediately behind the former Nelson County Jail (now the Jailer’s Inn Bed & Breakfast) in downtown Bardstown. It was established in 1789 and used primarily through the mid-19th century (last known burials around the 1850s). The cemetery contains the graves of early settlers, including Revolutionary War patriots such as John Fitch (inventor of the steamboat, whose remains were later moved), Proctor Ballard, Alexander McCown, George Willett Sr., and Jonathan Wood, along with members of the Gaither, Mathews, Higdon, Smiley, and other pioneer families. Many stones are weathered, broken, or missing; a significant portion of the grounds has unmarked graves. The City of Bardstown maintains the site along with the later City Cemetery (established 1852) and the Old Presbyterian Cemetery. The adjacent Jailer’s Inn building dates to 1819 (with later additions) and served as the county jail until 1987; its courtyard was once used for hangings.

Reported Hauntings and Folklore

Local tourism materials and ghost tours regularly describe Old Pioneer Cemetery as a “haunted landscape.” Visitors and tour participants report a general atmosphere of unease, unexplained noises, and occasional sightings of shadowy or wraith-like figures, especially after dark. Because the cemetery sits directly behind the Jailer’s Inn, stories about the two sites often blend: low moans, apparitions in the courtyard (once the gallows area), and residual activity attributed to former prisoners or jailers are sometimes extended to the adjacent burial ground. John Fitch’s temporary interment and subsequent removal is occasionally cited as additional lore. No single named apparition is consistently attached solely to the cemetery in published sources; the accounts remain general visitor impressions, tour narratives, and local tradition rather than the product of controlled investigation.
